Ham Radio / Amateur Radio is a hobby and beyond this it is a friendly group, and in some cases, a common service. The little town Adoor at Pathanamthitta District from Kerala plays a huge role in the development of Ham Radio. L VENKITESWARA SHARMA (VU2LV), also known as Sharmaji among the world hams, appreciates the services and contributions made to the ham world.
Many famous hams in Kerala and many other parts of India have been licensed with the help of Sharmaji. ADOOR AMATEUR RADIO CLUB was formed almost a quarter century ago under the leadership of Sharmaji. Its function is not limited to Adoor. Ham Radio has been showcased in many parts of Kerala and the hobby has spread to the public.
The Adoor Amateur Radio Club was formed in the year 1993 mainly due to earnestness of SWLs N.G.Koshy and Dr.K.Raju who approached me with a request to give them help in becoming a ham. Since I was the only ham in Adoor at that time I had to accede to their request. At that time ham radio was in its infancy and few people among the public knew what ham radio was. Being half eccentric by nature I had taken the trouble to conact stalwards like VU2JN,Om Jayaram,Vu2LN,Om neel and VU2TG Om Guhan who went out of the way to help me with their experience, knowledge and junk materials.Without their help I would have remained an SWL.
The club was formed and started functioning in my house with ten member selecting Dr.Raju as the president and N G Koshy as secretary. We started the classes with talks on electronics and assembling a few simple electronic circuits.Soon word spread out about our new venture and youngsters started pouring in and our membership roseto morethan fifty. A.S.O.C. Examination was conducted in Adoor and many came out successful. We made good use of the waiting period by assembling receivers, VFOs,power supply, antennas etc. Our club was the fIrst one to assemble a frequency meter successfully.
As soon as the licence was received our members started coming on the air and our club became one of the most popular in South India. This was no small achievement for a club working in a remote relatively underdeveloped place like Adoor. Encouraged by the success of our activities our members mooted the idea of conducting a ham expo at Adoor. We were not sure about the response from other hams because of the relative inaccessibility but we decided to go ahead. The function was inaugurated by Dr. Jayakumar VU2JKR the popular ham from Kottayam who always remains our well wisher and adviser.
Some of our activities are given below:
We extend our thanks to our members and fellow hams who by their unselfish service have helped to the success of all our ventures and made the club A LAND MARK IN HAM RADIO.
